This is a worrying one! A customer came to JGS4X4 for a gearbox Fluid flush and while his Land Rover was in the workshop he mentioned the brakes felt a bit spongy even though he had only just last week had new brake discs, pads, and calipers fitted at a garage.
Imagine our shock when we saw brake fluid dripping from the front caliper. Whoever had fitted the new brake caliper had forgotten to tighten the brake pipe fittings.
Every time the driver braked, fluid was escaping from the leaking pipe instead of pushing on the pistons in the calipers, luckily the pipe fitting was able to be tightened and the leak was fixed.
8 Warning Signs of Brake Problems – Don’t Ignore them!
- Brake Light On.
- Squealing, Squeaking or Grinding Noises
- Wobbling, Vibration or Scraping When Braking
- Leaking Fluid

- Bouncing Up and Down When You Stop Short
It could have been a lot worse! Maybe he should have referred to his Haynes Land Rover Manual – Haynes Shows You How!
If you notice a difference in braking performance, a burning smell while driving,
or noise related to braking, get a brake check right away!
A tribute to a great man
John Haynes OBE (25th March 1938 – 8th February 2019),
John Haynes, sadly passed away earlier this month. He was the creator of the Haynes Manual & Haynes publishing. I am sure all mechanics have referred to a Haynes Manual at some point in their life! Especially us older ones before the days of the internet. Every car manufacturer you could ever think of has a Haynes Manual. There is even some great ‘tips and tutorials’ online now – need I say more!
I am sure his books will be referred to for many years to come! A sad loss.
