We fitted a set of Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tyres on our JGS4x4 Discovery 3 last September, replacing a set of nearly new BFG KM2 Mud Terrains.
We regularly get asked what these tyres are like so here is a mini review.
The JGS4x4 Discovery 3 originally had a set of standard road tyres on, they were near the limit so we thought a nice set of BFG Mud Terrains would be the best tyre to fit as the car is used for off-roading and without a winch the theory was that a decent set of mud tyres would be worth it.
The BFG Mud Terrains were OK but not special in any area, they were OK on the road, a bit noisy and a bit harsh but nothing too bad. Off-road they were again OK but not as spectacular as the reviews would have you believe. They never seriously let us down but they never performed outstandingly. What was noticeable was the cuts and chunking that they suffered. The Discovery 3 is a heavy vehicle but these tyres had only done around 3K miles when removed and they looked like they had done much more with chunks missing from the tread blocks and minor cuts in the sidewalls.
We wanted a bigger tyre so we changed to a set of the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tyres in 265/75 R16 size. These are marketed more as an All-Terrain tyre rather than a full Mud Tyre but to us they are a serious mud tyre but with better road manners. Since fitting the tyres we have done around 5K miles of which we have done some serious off-roading from pay and play quarry sites, muddy lanes, rocky mountain tracks and motorways and country roads in the dry, wet and snowy conditions.
Overall we are very pleased with the Cooper Discoverer ST-Maxx, they are extremely capable on and off-road, they give you confidence to go anywhere and are strong and hard wearing, our set of tyres still look like new with no noticeable wear or damage.
The best thing is the on-road handling, the tyres are smooth, comfortable and quiet. Road handling is exceptional with none of the usual traits of an aggressive mud tyre.
So in summary we are very pleased with these tyres, we would certainly recommend them to anybody, another great plus is that they look fantastic too!
