Is there going to be a New Land Rover Defender Pickup?
With a gap of 3 years since Land Rover ceased the production of the original Defender in 2016, Land Rover launched the new Defender in late 2019 initially with the One Ten version available in five and seven-seater versions and the Ninety model set to follow later in 2020.
The New Land Rover Defender model looks set to being marketed firmly at the young, adventurous family with higher levels of equipment and luxury than any of the previous Defender models. So much so that many are dubbing it as the real successor to the Land Rover Discovery 4 rather than a ‘real’ Defender especially as the New Discovery 5 has not been as well-received as Land Rover would have hoped.
Whilst there are many 4×4 pickups and crew cabs on the market from Nissan, Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen and even Mercedes, it has to be argued that they are not as tough, reliable and as capable as the original Defender that utility companies, construction workers, tree surgeons as well as farmers need.
So far there has been no news or hints that a commercial or utility version of the New Defender will be manufactured and from what we can see, the New Defender’s construction does not lend itself to having a pickup, crew cab or flatbed version.
A Shropshire firm, Suzuki Jimny Pickups has been converting Suzuki Jimny’s into pickups for several years and has now started offering conversions for the recently launched New Suzuki Jimny.
The Suzuki Jimny is a great small 4×4 car, farmers find them great as a runaround and even as a more comfortable alternative to a quad, their lightweight making them great for applying slug pellets on newly sown crops. However the limited size, power and towing capacity limit their appeal to those that need to carry large loads or tow heavy trailers.
Have Land Rover slipped up by not offering a utility or pickup variant? Is there a market for businesses like Suzuki Jimny Pickups to be offering conversions for the New Defender or is the New Defender simply too expensive to be attractive as a commercial vehicle?
