We have had a mad rush on ATF gearbox flushes this week, must be everybody getting ready for the long May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
First thing this morning we had this nice Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE in for a gearbox mega flush, it had the usual symptoms of engine revs hunting between gears, reluctant to change gear and occasional shuddering from the torque converter. The customer was surprised to see just how black and burnt the old fluid was even though the car has only done 112,ooo miles.
Whilst driving the Discovery into the workshop it was noted that the gear selector lever was very stiff, so whilst we were underneath checking the gearbox fluid level we applied some penetrating oil and then some spray grease to the gearbox linkage and shifter cable, this immediately made it feel smoother.
For cars that are suffering from torque converter judder, we have started recommending that we add a tube of Dr Tranny Shudder Fix whilst doing the gearbox flush. In most cases just changing the gearbox fluid will cure the judders but as a preventative measure, Dr Tranny Shudder Fix will help with fluid heat transfer and could help prevent it re-occurring in the future.
