The hugely popular, capable and versatile Land Rover Discovery 2 models came with either standard coil spring suspension or self-levelling air suspension on the rear.
James from JGS4x4 says: “The Discovery 2 air suspension is an excellent system, Land Rover developed it to give superior handling and comfort over standard coil springs, and it is particularly suited to heavy towing. However, the air suspension is prone to problems that can cause it to fail, which can be expensive to repair.”
As with any mechanical and electrical components, they do wear out with use and age. The air springs are made of rubber and can perish and leak as can the air pipes. The compressors have moving parts that will inevitably wear out sooner or later. There are also sensors and electrical connector underneath the car that are subject to harsh conditions.
Diagnosing and repairing air suspension faults can become expensive. Many owners choose to convert the rear air suspension to coil springs. The conversion is easy and relatively cheap and does away entirely with the air suspension and all the related problems.
JGS4x4 offers complete Discovery 2 air to coil spring conversion kits with suitable coil springs and the associated hardware required to fit. Fitting should take a couple of hours at the most, and if you are a reasonable DIY mechanic, you should find it easy enough.
The only technical bit is having to tell the ECU that the suspension has been changed from air to coil-spring suspension otherwise you will have a permanently illuminated warning light on the dashboard. This programming can be done by using a specialist Land Rover diagnostic unit such as the Bearmach Hawkeye Total BA5068 or Lynx Evo DA1500 or by visiting your local Land Rover specialist.
JGS4x4 offer Discovery 2 coil spring conversion kits in standard height versions from both Britpart and Terrafirma depending on your preference, both are excellent kits and are among our best sellers.
The Land Rover Discovery 2 is already a very capable off-road vehicle but if you are looking to fit larger tyres for off-roading then installing a 2″ suspension lift may be what you are looking for. You cannot go wrong with the Terrafirma TF227 complete coil spring and All Terrain shock absorber kit.
Whichever model of Land Rover you own, whether it is a Freelander, Defender, Discovery or Range Rover, JGS4x4 has a large range of parts and accessories for maintaining, servicing and personalising your Land Rover, available for worldwide delivery on the JGS4x4 website.
