The Discovery 2 was a vast improvement over the original Discovery in terms of comfort and performance. Even in standard specification with normal road tyres, it makes a formidable off-roader.
In recent years the Discovery 2 has grown in popularity among 4×4 and off-road enthusiasts with many owners wishing to upgrade and improve their already capable off-roader.
Larger aggresive tyres
One of the first upgrades that many owners want to do is fit larger and more aggressive off-road mud tyres and a suspension lift kit.
A suspension lift kit allows larger tyres to be fitted and also improves the approach, break-over and departure angles and allows the vehicle to traverse heavily rutted terrain and rock crawling with less risk of grounding out or causing damage.
JGS4x4 stock many different suspension lift kits that are suitable for the Discovery 2 from brands including Terrafirma 4×4 and Britpart. When choosing a suspension kit, you need to consider the amount of extra equipment or weight that you might be carrying. This could include a heavy-duty winch bumper, roof rack or roof tent, tools and equipment and of course passengers.
Keep the wheels firmly on the ground for traction and stability
Aftermarket suspension kits are all normally called ‘Heavy-Duty’ which causes confusion as they also come in light, medium and heavy load variants and typically give a 40mm or 2″ rise in height over a standard vehicle. The length and strength of the coil springs control the vehicle ride height, and the shock absorbers control the bounce. When fitting taller coil springs, you need to fit longer shock absorbers to accommodate the extra suspension travel to keep the wheels firmly on the ground for traction and stability.
The advantage in buying a suspension lift kit from JGS4x4 is that the coil springs and shock absorbers will be matched and ideal for the vehicle, weight and intended use.
Our advice at JGS4x4 would be to think carefully about how much weight you will or could potentially carry in the future. For most applications, a medium load kit would be suitable for most people, even those that tow heavy trailers. Only go for a heavy load rated suspension kit if your vehicle is heavily modified with lots of accessories and carries lots of weight most of the time.
